Facilities and Safety

Processing excellence

Advancements in cornea transplantation have revolutionized the modern-day eye bank’s role in patient care, increasing the collaboration between surgeon and eye bank to provide patients with the best possible outcomes. Sierra Donor Services Eye Bank (SDSEB) takes this charge very seriously and, as a result, we have invested in equipment and laboratory facilities that exceed all industry standards.

Our eye bank processing environments are comprised of ISO 5 and ISO 7 clean rooms with a controlled ante-room environment, which are monitored 24/7 and well stocked with equipment from some of the most reputable brands, such as Haag-Streit, Konan, Leica, and Optovue.

Safety first

Adhering to the highest standards for safety and efficacy of tissues, SDSEB is the preferred provider of corneal tissue in the communities from where our donor tissue is recovered.

We are driven by a team of professionals who are passionate about assuring that quality ocular grafts are delivered to meet surgical needs and improve the lives of patients. As a result, our robust quality systems ensure that each ocular graft meets or exceeds stringent regulatory and safety requirements. This includes full accreditation for recovery, processing, tissue storage, final distribution, tissue evaluations, and donor eligibility determination by the Eye Bank Association of America (EBAA) and registration with the U.S. Food and Drug Administration (FDA).

Quality control

The SDSEB Quality Department has received multiple certifications through the American Society of Quality – a rare distinction within the eye bank industry.

Our organization’s culture of quality and process improvement is prevalent in everything we do, namely in our comprehensive audits of every procedure. This includes an exhaustive review of all donor medical and hospital records, from laboratory and pathology reports to donor recovery records, tissue processing, and any other pertinent information to determine suitability of tissue for transplant. Our Quality Department also ensures that laboratory space, equipment, and materials are in compliance with the maintenance, monitoring, and storage requirements of all regulatory bodies. This translates into full confidence in the safety and quality of our tissue for our surgeons, partners, and patients.

Donor screening

To mitigate the risk of disease transmission, our donor screening process follows rigorous guidelines set by all governing bodies, including the Centers for Disease Control (CDC) and the FDA. This involves obtaining and reviewing a comprehensive social and medical history of each donor. In addition, all processes and equipment are validated by our medical directors to ensure consistent results and adherence to high standards. Our eye bank technical staff is routinely evaluated by our medical directors to ensure consistent, optimal outcomes.
