One of the world’s preeminent and highly respected leaders in eye banking, Dr. Mannis has a broad scope of knowledge and experience in ocular recovery, evaluation and transplantation. One of the pioneers in developing eye bank standards and practices, Dr. Mannis has written numerous clinical and basic research papers for peer-reviewed publications, has authored five books, and has served as the Editor-in-Chief of the journal, Cornea. Dr. Mannis is a recipient of the R. Townley Paton Award from EBAA, the most prestigious prize awarded in the eye banking industry.

Dr. Li graduated cum laude in Molecular Biophysics and Biochemistry from Yale University. She subsequently received her medical degree and residency training at Baylor College of Medicine in Houston, Texas, and completed a fellowship in cornea, external disease, and refractive surgery at the University of California, Davis. She has published numerous scientific papers and book chapters on corneal transplantation techniques and outcomes. Dr. Li is actively involved with the Eye Bank Association of America where she is the vice-chair of the EBAA Medical Advisory Board. She is a member of the Sierra Donor Services Advisory Board.
Richard D. Grutzmacher, M.D.
Dr. Grutzmacher, a Phi Beta Kappa graduate of the University of California, Berkeley, received his medical degree from Northwestern University Medical School. Dr. Grutzmacher is board certified in both Internal Medicine and Ophthalmology. For more than two decades, Dr. Grutzmacher has been active in surgery of the cornea, including a variety of refractive surgical procedures. He has published numerous articles in ophthalmology literature and has lectured nationally. In addition, Dr. Grutzmacher, a well-known LASIK surgeon, has been instrumental in advancing refractive surgery in the Sacramento Valley region by instructing numerous area physicians in PRK and LASIK.
Ivan R. Schwab M.D., F.A.C.S.
Professor of Ophthalmology at the University of California, Davis
Dr. Schwab has served as one of the seventeen directors on the American Board of Ophthalmology and now serves on several editorial boards for ophthalmology journals including the associate editor on the journal Cornea, Ophthalmology, and the British Journal of Ophthalmology. He is active in the American Academy of Ophthalmology, chairing committees on education and alternative medications. His publications of more than 240 peer-reviewed papers, 35 chapters, many white papers, and abstracts include work on bioengineered tissues and ocular surface rehabilitation as well as infectious ocular diseases. He has written five books including one on diseases of the eye and skin, and a comprehensive single-authored text on the evolution of the eye entitled “Evolution’s Witness: How Eyes Evolved.” This highly acclaimed text was published in November 2011.
Erich B. Groos, Jr., M.D.
Founding Partner of Cornea Consultants of Nashville and Medical Director of the Eye Surgery Center of Nashville
Dr. Groos has been involved with eye banking since his fellowship at UC Davis in 1992. He has served as medical director of DCI Middle Tennessee Eye and Tissue bank since 1997. He has been selected president of both the Nashville and Tennessee Academies of Ophthalmology and currently sits on the Council of the American Academy of Ophthalmology. Dr. Groos has been selected one of the Best Doctors in America since 2009.
Dr. Tran joined the Vanderbilt Eye Institute as a board certified fellowship-trained corneal and refractive surgeon in July 2002. Dr. Tran received her medical degree from the Medical College of Virginia. She then went on to do her surgical internship at Georgetown University and completed residency in ophthalmology at the Medical College of Virginia. Her specialty fellowship training in Cornea and Refractive surgery was completed at Vanderbilt University. Dr. Tran specializes in the management of corneal and external diseases, corneal transplantation, cataract and refractive surgery. Dr. Tran has extensive skills and experience in the state-of-the-art forms for anterior segment surgery – including Bladeless Wavefront guided Custom LASIK.
